Sugar Gliders

Many people buy dogs, cats, rabbits or fishes as pets, but this pet is an unusual pet. Some people mistakenly called them “Flying Squirrels”, but they are not. Even though they mostly alike but they have their own differences. A flying squirrel is slightly bigger and the flying squirrels have similar colors but they have different color patterns throughout their body, while they also have their similarities. They are both nocturnal animals, they both have large black eyes and they both have a membrane connecting their wrists to their ankles, which act as wings which they use to glide. This animal is called a Sugar Glider.

A Sugar Glider is a small animal, a full grown adult’s body would reach 5-6 inches long and the tail would add another 6 inches. They weigh only 100-160 grams. Their whole lifespan would reach about 10-15 years. Their diet suggests that sugar and fruits make up a portion of their diet, but they also eat insects, which make up another portion of their diet. You can feed them June Bugs or Grasshoppers and Mealworms and other insects. You can also feed the Sugar Gliders apples, pears or watermelons or cantaloupe, but you will need to slice them into smaller pieces before giving it to them. Sugar Gliders need a place with a big space to live in so they have a lot of room to jump and climb around in. Most of their activities are vertical rather than horizontal, so will they need a tall cage so they can climb, jump and glide. A bigger cage would be more preferable, also adding a few platforms would make a great addition to their cage. The bottom of the cage would need wood shavings to absorb the waste so you can just clean it every now and then. You can also add some foliage at the bottom of the cage with the wood shavings. The ideal temperature would be about 26°C to about 32°C. The cage will also need a box for nesting, you can buy them at your local pet stores or you can make one. The cage should not be put to direct sunlight or strong winds. The cage would also sometimes affect their temperament. Sugar Gliders are very social and they crave for lots of companionship and attention. If you can provide a lot of companionship and attention to you sugar glider, then one Sugar Glider can work. But if you can’t provide much attention and companionship, then I would advise you to get a companion for your Sugar Glider, preferably a same gender partner if you don’t want them to multiply. Introducing adults would be difficult, so it would be better to raise them together at a young age.

These are ways that you can follow to take care of a Sugar Glider. Sugar Gliders are not so easy to take care off. If you follow all these steps, then you can be able to take care of your own Sugar Glider, if you don’t, then you will be able to find a Sugar Glider corpse in the cage. These are not the only steps to take care of a Sugar Glider. You will learn more steps on how to take care of a Sugar Glider when you actually own one, as the Sugar Glider will guide you how it wants you to take care of it, as you and your Glider bonds together.
